How Alternators Work

  • What is an alternator? – The alternator is so named because it generates alternating current. This component is responsible for generating electricity to keep the battery charged and to power the electrical systems of your vehicle, including the headlights, cabin lights, dashboard, window motors, windshield wipers, etc.
  • How does the alternator generate electricity? – Alternators are connected to your vehicle’s crankshaft, which converts the up-and-down movement of the engine pistons into a circular movement to turn the wheels. The alternator contains a rotor assembly, which generates a magnetic field as it turns. In this way, alternators use the mechanical movements of the engine to create electrical energy for the vehicle. Essentially, they work the same way as a wind turbine, where the movement of the blades (or, in this case, the alternator) turns a turbine, which generates electricity.
  • How does the alternator get power to the other systems? – Alternators have several connection ports, which connect to wires that distribute electrical energy to the various other systems in the vehicle.
